How to Start an Energy Club was written by IEA Founding Member, Andrew Hunter

Simple Steps to Starting an Energy Club at your School

(Note: The rules at your school may be slightly different and so you may need to adapt the steps below.)

1. Find out who is in charge of school clubs at your school.

                School may have a teacher who serves as club coordinator.

                ASB sometimes takes the lead in making general club rules.

2. Find out when clubs are permitted to start.

                Some schools only allow it in the fall, others in fall and spring, and yet others at any time.

                Many schools have a club rush or club fair to help students learn more about available clubs.

3. Recruit a teacher advisor.

                It’s pretty standard at most schools to have a teacher advisor.

                Some advisors simply let you use their classrooms (okay), and others are very involved and will mentor you (better).

4. Recruit fellow students to be officers.

                Find out if your schools requires a minimum number of members you must have.

                You will usually need a president, vice president, secretary, and liaison to IEA. If your school allows fundraising, then a treasurer may also be required.

5. Your school will probably require some paperwork to be completed. Don’t be intimidated. You may borrow freely from the samples below.

Guidelines for Titles and Descriptions

Founder versus founding members:  If you are the founder of the club, you gain that title. If you begin the club with others, then perhaps you should consider sharing the title and you are all founders, but none of you is the founder.

President responsibilities:  As a leader, try to develop your leadership skills by reading up on leadership. Developing this skill can open many opportunities to you in the future. Leaders should lead and cannot possibly do all the tasks by themselves.

Vice president responsibilities:  If the president cannot attend a meeting or function because he or she has a swim meet or other obligation, the vice president could fill in for that meeting. Chose someone whose schedule will permit this.

Secretary responsibilities:  The secretary records decisions, goals, future action, and responsibilities. That way the next day when someone doesn’t remember what they are supposed to do, or when it needs to be done by, the secretary can help them remember.

Treasurer responsibilities:  You might not be permitted to conduct fundraising activities, in which case a treasurer might not be necessary. If you are allowed to raise funds, the school will usually have strict rules about handling the money. The treasurer would handle this. The treasurer can also handle budget planning and spending.

IEA liaison:  This is the person who keeps up on what’s going on with the alliance. By reading the IEA website, this person can be a wealth of information for your energy club. It can also be the person who writes the posts and comments on the IEA website.

Vice President versus IEA Liaison:  The vice president can take some of the workload of the president. The IEA also takes some of the workload off the president, but only in IEA matters.

Officer Recruitment Strategies

When looking to recruit real talent for your club, remember that a talented individual probably has many opportunities they can act on, but not enough time to do them all. Sure, an energy club is a worthy cause, and energy is an extremely hot issue these days, but you may need to give fellow students a better reason to get involved. In order to entice talent, you may need to share some of those lofty titles. Instead of president, there can be co-presidents. Instead of founder, there can be founding members. Instead of the president and IEA liaison being the same person, two different people can assume these two roles. Remember that this website offers a very unique opportunity, which is documenting your club’s goals, activities, events and achievements. You can also create new titles for members working on local or collaborative energy projects supported by the IEA (see “Membership Positions”). Having a lofty title will do nothing for you if it’s easy for someone to research you only to find that you’ve never done a thing. So spread those titles around to fellow students.

Encourage all Club Members to Join IEA

Helping with a highly successful mission is incredibly rewarding. If you wish, you may request a Google Analytics Report from the IEA at the time you begin your energy club, and then another sometime later to see that growth that has occurred with your help since you began your involvement. To date, our site has attracted attention from the U.S., Mexico, Pakistan, United Kingdom, Kenya, Australia, Germany, France, India, China, Japan, Canada, United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.

Encourage your Teacher Advisor to Become a IEA Website Content Contributor

All you need to do is request that we set an account up for your teacher, and your teacher can begin contributing content. This is a great way to get your teacher to be more invested in your club activities and to give your club more exposure.
