Green New Year’s Resolutions for 2012

December 26, 2011 | By | 6 Replies More

Hello everyone! I hope you are spending the warmest of holidays and preparing yourselves for the upcoming 2012. Here is a compiled list of green New Year’s resolution ideas. Add all of these to your master list!

  • Use public transportation. A ride on the subway or bus will not only reduce carbon emissions from your car but also save you the money you would have spent on gas. Public transportation allows you to be green ecologically and economically. According to the American Public Transportation Association, one person can reduce daily carbon emissions by 20 pounds by taking advantage of  public transportation.
  • Go paperless. Personally, I understand how difficult it may seem to cut paper out of your life completely, especially as a student. From study guides to Power Point presentations, everything needs to be printed in school. Nevertheless, think twice before printing. Power Point allows you to print up to 6 slides per page. Check to see if your printer manages double-sided printing. If not, print study guides on paper you would have otherwise thrown out. Persuade your teachers to have assignments turned in online on Edline or Turnitin. Another good idea is to have your family switch to paperless billing. Amongst other corporations, Wells Fargo and AT&T offer this option.
  • Switch to LED lighting. LED lightbulbs increase energy efficiency and reduce energy costs. Starting January 1, 2012, a new federal law will naturally diminish the demand for incandescent lightbulbs. You can read more on this new installment here.
  • Unplug. Whenever electronic devices are not in use, unplug them from energy outlets. Plugged devices continue to demand energy even if the electronic device is off or no longer in use. This is sometimes referred to as phantom power. It makes up around 10% of a typical home’s energy bill. I repeat, unplug. Having several devices plugged into a power strip would make this easier as you can simply flick the on and off button according to your need.
  • Consider going solar. Although this is not a day to day resolution, switching to solar energy can have incredible benefits throughout 2012 and the years to come. Mull over the repercussions of investing in solar energy with your family. You might find this article particularly helpful.
I send you all the best of luck in 2012, Ariela.
