International Energy Alliance members traveled to Shanghai, China, to study environmental and energy issues in urban planning June 24-29. This study was actually designed by Andrew Hunter, Paolo Noppenberger and Ariela Osuna with the help of HPP architects based in Germany, Energy Design also based in Germany, and Tongji University based in Shanghai. Andrew had been helping with urban planning for the city of Aliso Viejo in California and had forwarded the PowerPoint presentations from the city to Shanghai so that the ideas and issues could be integrated into the lectures. The city of Aliso Viejo Green Initiative is now a collaborative project for the IEA.

Ariela Osuna has been especially supportive for both the Aliso Viejo project and the Shanghai project because she intends to study architecture when she begins college in 2013. IEA key member, Jiarui Zhou, was a very critical component since she could help with the Chinese arrangements since, of course, she speaks Chinese and she knows China. She served as interpreter for IEA members while in China. Other IEA participants include Yiyin Zhong and Guo Cao. Jiarui, Zhong and Cao all attend school in the U.S. but traveled to China just to attend this study. We are incredibly grateful to their parents for each taking us out for amazing dinners on different nights!! Thank you to HPP for an excellent dinner as well.

Special thanks to Dr. Feng of Tongji University, Dr. Schwede of Energy Design, and especially Werner Subai and Jens Kump of HPP for putting this study together and helping administer it.

I am in my second year of a five year combination BS physics/math and MS systems engineering program offered jointly through Haverford College and UPenn. Helping my community is a lot of fun and means a great deal to me. Through the IEA and other efforts, I've come to learn how much power many can have when there is a clear positive vision, motivation and momentum.
